Buzau red onion

In the Buzăului Valley, in Buzău County, there is a culinary treasure known as the “red onion of Buzău”. Thanks to the favourable climatic conditions of agriculture in this region, red onions have enjoyed a high quality development.

It stands out for its large chunks, attractive coloured rind, sweet-spicy taste and slightly crunchy texture. It is sold in markets or on roadsides, often in bundles, to last as long as possible.

It occupies a special place among the recipes of traditional Romanian dishes and is declared the pride of the Buzoin region.

History and tradition

It is said that this variety appeared a long time ago, at the time when the gardeners of Buzoi began to sell their white onions across the Carpathians, in the markets of Transylvania. Unsuccessful, as red onions were preferred, the more skilful villagers cultivated their traditional onions in one place and let them cross freely with red onions brought from Transylvania.

Horticulturists declared it a genetic success. It is juicy, medium dry and pleasantly aromatic.
